Twenty-one

Auty’s cell phone rang. The screen read “RR.”

“Hey, Rosie, what’s up?”

“Oh, Auty. You won’t believe this.”

“You’ve heard from your brother?” Auty asked enthusiastically.

“No. I was shopping with Mother and when we got home there was a message from ─ are you ready? ─ Devlin Seely.”

“What in the world did he want?”

“He wants me to come to work for him.”

“Doing what?”

“He wants me to train and manage all the hostesses for his aircraft fleet ─ even do the hiring.”

“I see,” Auty said, taken aback at Rosie’s news.

“The best part is he’s talking a six figure income. Can you imagine?”

“He talked to you for a total of five minutes in the hospital a couple times and he’s offering you a salary of a hundred thousand dollars? I thought you and your father said he was such a brilliant businessman.”

“What’s that supposed to mean?”

“I don’t mean you’re not worth a hundred grand, in fact, you’re priceless.” He could almost see Rosie smiling. “What I mean is what kind of CEO offers that kind of money without an interview or background check ─ a CV?”

“I did tell him I’m a flight attendant, you know.”

“What’s about the airlines?”

“I can’t wait to give my notice. It will be such a relief leaving that company.”

“You’ve already made up your mind?”

“It’s a no-brainer ─ isn’t it? And I will likely go along with him on some business trips to Europe and South America.”

Auty imagined Rosie waiting for some sarcastic response, but he didn’t offer any. “That’s nice,” is all he could manage.

“Are you happy for me?”

“All I want is happiness for you.”

“You’re very sweet, Mr. Austin.”

“So when do you start?”

“Devlin knows I have Dan on my mind. He’s not rushing me. I’m meeting him at his office for lunch tomorrow.”

“Devlin is it?”

“It is his name, and remember, he told me to call him that.”

“I just don’t like the guy.”

“Maybe when he gets your name right you’ll feel more benevolent toward him. Do you really have a good reason not to like him?”

“I don’t need a good reason, but not getting my name right is reason enough.”

Auty visualized the glamour, prestige and dollar signs floating around in Rosie’s head. There wasn’t going to be anything he could say to change her mind. But something was unsettling about how quickly this deal was put together ─ and why. There was silence on the line for a moment.

“I’m giving my notice tomorrow. There are friends I want to say goodbye to,” Rosie finally said.

“It’s late and I’m sure you’re tired. I’ll call you tomorrow night. You can tell me all about lunch.”

“No, I’ll call you.”

“Right,” he said and then hung up.
