Autyâs cell phone rang. The screen read âRR.â
âHey, Rosie, whatâs up?â
âOh, Auty. You wonât believe this.â
âYouâve heard from your brother?â Auty asked enthusiastically.
âNo. I was shopping with Mother and when we got home there was a message from â are you ready? â Devlin Seely.â
âWhat in the world did he want?â
âHe wants me to come to work for him.â
âDoing what?â
âHe wants me to train and manage all the hostesses for his aircraft fleet â even do the hiring.â
âI see,â Auty said, taken aback at Rosieâs news.
âThe best part is heâs talking a six figure income. Can you imagine?â
âHe talked to you for a total of five minutes in the hospital a couple times and heâs offering you a salary of a hundred thousand dollars? I thought you and your father said he was such a brilliant businessman.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
âI donât mean youâre not worth a hundred grand, in fact, youâre priceless.â He could almost see Rosie smiling. âWhat I mean is what kind of CEO offers that kind of money without an interview or background check â a CV?â
âI did tell him Iâm a flight attendant, you know.â
âWhatâs about the airlines?â
âI canât wait to give my notice. It will be such a relief leaving that company.â
âYouâve already made up your mind?â
âItâs a no-brainer â isnât it? And I will likely go along with him on some business trips to Europe and South America.â
Auty imagined Rosie waiting for some sarcastic response, but he didnât offer any. âThatâs nice,â is all he could manage.
âAre you happy for me?â
âAll I want is happiness for you.â
âYouâre very sweet, Mr. Austin.â
âSo when do you start?â
âDevlin knows I have Dan on my mind. Heâs not rushing me. Iâm meeting him at his office for lunch tomorrow.â
âDevlin is it?â
âIt is his name, and remember, he told me to call him that.â
âI just donât like the guy.â
âMaybe when he gets your name right youâll feel more benevolent toward him. Do you really have a good reason not to like him?â
âI donât need a good reason, but not getting my name right is reason enough.â
Auty visualized the glamour, prestige and dollar signs floating around in Rosieâs head. There wasnât going to be anything he could say to change her mind. But something was unsettling about how quickly this deal was put together â and why. There was silence on the line for a moment.
âIâm giving my notice tomorrow. There are friends I want to say goodbye to,â Rosie finally said.
âItâs late and Iâm sure youâre tired. Iâll call you tomorrow night. You can tell me all about lunch.â
âNo, Iâll call you.â
âRight,â he said and then hung up.
